Chloe's Fund for Medical Needs of Florence Shelter Animals

Our Story

Chloe's Fund was started in March of 2017 after Glen and Debby Nelson lost their beloved dog of 16 years, Chloe. After Chloe's passing, Debby set out on a mission to help as many sick and injured Florence, AL shelter animals as possible.

Prior to Chloe's Fund, the Florence Lauderdale Animal Shelter could not afford the necessary treatment for every ailing cat or dog that entered its doors. Their only hope was the possibility of a rescue stepping up and financing the veterinary care needed. For those animals with costly medical bills predicted and no rescue hero in sight, our dedicated shelter employees were faced with heartbreaking decisions.

Chloe's Fund volunteers work hard to raise money allowing thousands of animals to have life saving treatments and surgeries. Once these animals are well enough, they are ready to find their fur-ever homes. Please visit Florence Lauderdale Animal Services Facebook page to see available animals or stop by the shelter at
3240 Roberson Rd Florence, AL 35630

2025 Year-End Recap

Chloe’s Fund had another busy year.  In 2025, we helped 273 animals and spent $136,500 on their medical needs.
This was 147 more animals than the previous year!

The animals we help are in urgent or emergency situations. November was our most expensive month with a large portion of the money being spent on puppies. Heartworm and Parvovirus are very preventable conditions. Heartworm prevention is accomplished by simply giving your pet a treat once a month that usually costs less than $100 per year. If your pet gets heartworm, the treatment can cost thousands of dollars. Parvovirus and panleukopenia (kitten parvo) is prevented with a yearly vaccination.

We constantly fundraise and cannot do what we do without help from our volunteers and donors. We were able to raise more than $62,400 this year and received $36,000 in grant money.
Bake sales are our most lucrative fundraisers. This year a new donation record was set during our December bake sale. We (and the fur babies) are so humble and grateful for the support from our community.
This would not be possible without you!

Please support Chloe’s Fund so that we can continue saving the lives of animals and assisting pet owners.

Thank you so much for a wonderful year! Let’s make 2026 even better!

"We work tirelessly to help innocent animals, but parvovirus is draining us.
All over the U.S., shelters are either closing intake until the epidemic is under control or euthanizing
every puppy with parvo and kitten with panleukopenia (kitten parvo)." - Debby Nelson

Parvovirus cases and hospitalizations have been on the rise for the last few years. According to some veterinarians, the pandemic could have contributed to the uptick in cases. During the early months, pet adoptions skyrocketed as people sought animals for companionship while stuck at home during lockdowns. And with more animals leaving shelters and spending time exploring outdoor environments with their new families, the risk of environmental exposure increased.

Furthermore, as the world focused on slowing the spread [of COVID], many practices suspended wellness care services, including vaccinations. New puppies were still being born, though. They were simply unable to obtain the required initial vaccinations, including the parvo vaccine. Financial hardships caused by the pandemic have also prevented many pet owners from keeping up with their companions' vaccine protocol.
